I never really prayed the rosary by myself before, it was always just that LONG prayer we had to say before mass. But it was through the holy rosary that I began to walk closer to Christ. “What is the rosary, anyway?” It’s an act of mediation on the life of our Lord. We pray the Hail Mary repetitively, 53 times to be exact. The Hail Mary is a beautiful prayer in which we acknowledge the holy woman that our God chose to be His Son’s earthly mother.
~Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen~
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, ‘Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.'”(Luke 1:28)
“When Elizabeth heard Mary is greeting. The infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.””(Luke1:41-42)
The whole first half of the Hail Mary is straight outta the Holy scriptures! How awesome is that! The second half is where we recognize and acknowledge that yes, Mary is a holy woman, chosen by God to birth and care for His Son! That sounds pretty Holy to me. Just as God is fully alive in heaven with the angels and Saints, Mary is right up there with Him. Through the Hail Mary we ask her to “Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death”.
“When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom He loved, he said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour on the disciple took her into his home.”(John 19:26-27)
Jesus gave us, His beloved disciples, His Mother to have as our own. Christ told us, as He hung on the cross, that we are to take Mary as our mother, and Mary takes us to be her beloved children. She loves us dearly and prays that we might love Jesus with our whole heart.
The Mysteries of the Rosary are meditations on the life and death of Jesus. The mysteries are the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries and the Glorious Mysteries. Each of these sets of Mysteries contemplates five different stages of Christ’s life. As we say the Hail Marys(asking for the guidance and prayers of our beloved mother) we meditate on the life Christ.
“The Rosary is the ‘weapon’ for these times.” -Saint Padre Pio
“Some people are so foolish that they think they can go through life without the help of the Blessed Mother. Love the Madonna and pray the rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother.” -Saint Padre Pio
“The holy Rosary is a powerful weapon. Use it with confidence and you’ll be amazed at the results.” -St. Josemaria Escriva
